Artist: Modigliani "Bride and Groom"

Amedeo Modigliani  (1884 - 1920) was a late-18th century European artist who never lived to see his success, but his paintings are some of my all-time favorites. He settled in Paris in 1906 and was friends with Picasso, Brancusi and Soutine. I love his portraits with elongated faces in soulful colors. Modigliani drew his faces in stretched proportions as his eyes usually sit near the top of the face. Our project of the "Bride and Groom" 1915, works with facial proportions, color, shapes and space to create our elongated portrait.

Materials: Heavyweight paper, Sketching pencil, sharpie and colored pencils, pastel chalk or oil pastels to finish.
Step #1: Draw light guidelines across the middle and down the center of the page. Draw a "U" shape for the mans head and a large narrow oval for the woman's head as shown below.
Step #2: Draw the eyes, nose mouth and ears of the man and woman. Draw the man with a mustache and the woman with a earring.
Step #3: Draw Man with a tuxedo . Draw the woman with elongated neck.

Step #4: Draw a window above the woman's head and add your own details. Have fun and get creative.

Artist: Paul Klee - Cat and Bird

One of my favorite artist is Paul Klee, his work is simple and complicated at same time. Paul Klee was a Swiss artist and teacher from the early 1900's who liked to turn things he saw into simple geometric shapes. His "Cat and Bird” painting from 1928 is a classic example of his philosophy. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. Picasso Rooster "Le Coq"

I needed a animal drawing for one of our programs and I came across this fabulous Picasso Rooster from 1938. I fell in love with the line, shape and color of the this Picasso pastel. Pablo Picasso was one of the most famous and prolific artists ever. Picasso had tremendous diversity and abundance to his career. The Rooster is a work from 1938 when he was experimenting with color and line. Picasso had a great love for animals and birds, he even named his daughter Palamo which means dove in Spanish. We find several works where used chickens, roosters, sheep and goats. Picasso used line, color and shape to create emotion and movement in this work. Our lesson works with shapes, lines and color to create our rooster, we use combination of watercolor pencils with pastels. Artist: Henri Rousseau - Surprised! Storm in the Forest

One of the best animal artists for kids is Henri Rousseau. Henri Rousseau (1844 – 1910) was a French artist did not start painting until he was in his 40’s. Ridiculed during his life, he came to be recognized as a self-taught genius whose works are of high artistic quality. He tried to paint in the schooled manner of the traditional artists, but it was the innocence and charm of his work that won him the admiration of many avant-garde artists such as Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso. Rousseau's loving attention to detail that made him an exceptional artist. We use Rousseau “Surprised, storm in the forest” as the inspiration for our lesson.
