Alhambra Geometric Design

Al-Andalus was the Arabic name given to a nation in parts of Spain governed by Muslims (given the generic name of Moors), at various times in the period between 711 and 1492. The Moors were the most culturally sophisticated people in Europe. The Alhambra designs from the palaces in Granada are used as our inspiration for our lesson. We used geometric patterns and shapes to create our work. These designs can look simple but very complicated .

Materials: Heavyweight sketching paper, sketching pencil, ruler, card stock for template. Your choice of materials to finish project.

Step #1: Draw guidelines down the center and across the middle of the page. Use a ruler to make a 3" square template. Outline the 3" square template where your guidelines intersect. Then take your 3" template and turn it 90 degrees clockwise and outline it again as shown below.
Step #2: Start from the center and create your symmetrical design. For this example i was inspired by flower design.
Step #3: Continue your geometric design off the squares, see example below;
Step #4: Try to use geometric shapes such as circles, square, rectangle, oval and triangle. Once the design is complete use a sharpie to outline all the lines you want to keep. Then erase all the left over pencil lines.
Step #5: Now its time to finish the drawing with your choice of materials. Have fun and be creative.

Artist: Paul Klee - Cat and Bird

One of my favorite artist is Paul Klee, his work is simple and complicated at same time. Paul Klee was a Swiss artist and teacher from the early 1900's who liked to turn things he saw into simple geometric shapes. His "Cat and Bird” painting from 1928 is a classic example of his philosophy. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. Picasso Rooster "Le Coq"

I needed a animal drawing for one of our programs and I came across this fabulous Picasso Rooster from 1938. I fell in love with the line, shape and color of the this Picasso pastel. Pablo Picasso was one of the most famous and prolific artists ever. Picasso had tremendous diversity and abundance to his career. The Rooster is a work from 1938 when he was experimenting with color and line. Picasso had a great love for animals and birds, he even named his daughter Palamo which means dove in Spanish. We find several works where used chickens, roosters, sheep and goats. Picasso used line, color and shape to create emotion and movement in this work. Our lesson works with shapes, lines and color to create our rooster, we use combination of watercolor pencils with pastels. Artist: Van Gogh Sunflowers

Vincent Van Gogh (1853- 1890) was son of a Dutch pastor in The Netherlands. He was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th century art for its vivid colors and emotional impact. Little appreciated during his lifetime, his fame grew in the years after his death. Today, he is widely regarded as one of history's greatest painters and an important contributor to the foundations of modern art . Most of his best-known works were produced during his final two years in Arles France. He painted several studies of the Sunflowers as a deliberate experiment in color. Our project uses one of Van Gogh Sunflower still life to work on the elements of composition and color.
