Art Journal #102 - Selecting An Art Journal And Personalizing the Cover

My favorite way to keep drawing is through my art journal. I bring it everywhere, so if something catches my attention I can do a quick sketch or sit down and take my time. Choosing the right art journal is important, you want a journal that is small enough to go anywhere and big enough to express your creativity. The one I love is the Canson Sketch Universal - 100page microperforated with a spiral spine.
Size: 5.5 X 8.5" (13.9x21.6cm)
Paper: 65lb (96g) - You need at least 60lb paper.


Personalize your art journal cover.
Step #1: Coat the cover with a gesso, use 2 to 3 layers of thin gesso to prepare the cover. Let the gesso dry.
Step #2: Design your cover in pencil.
Step #3: Use your choice of permanent art markers (not crayola or any washable markers) watercolor pencils, oil pastels, acrylic paint ect.
Step #4: Let dry and use a Gloss medium varnish (I use liquitex). Coat the cover with a thin layer of the varnish and let dry. The varnish will dry in just a few minutes and will protect your journal, its a permanent finish.
Step #5: Attach your favorite mechanical pencil to the wire spine and write the date on the inside cover.

Picasso Rooster "Le Coq"

I needed a animal drawing for one of our programs and I came across this fabulous Picasso Rooster from 1938. I fell in love with the line, shape and color of the this Picasso pastel. Pablo Picasso was one of the most famous and prolific artists ever. Picasso had tremendous diversity and abundance to his career. The Rooster is a work from 1938 when he was experimenting with color and line. Picasso had a great love for animals and birds, he even named his daughter Palamo which means dove in Spanish. We find several works where used chickens, roosters, sheep and goats. Picasso used line, color and shape to create emotion and movement in this work. Our lesson works with shapes, lines and color to create our rooster, we use combination of watercolor pencils with pastels. Artist: Paul Klee - Cat and Bird

One of my favorite artist is Paul Klee, his work is simple and complicated at same time. Paul Klee was a Swiss artist and teacher from the early 1900's who liked to turn things he saw into simple geometric shapes. His "Cat and Bird” painting from 1928 is a classic example of his philosophy. Klee grew up in a musical family and was himself a violinist. After much hesitation he chose to study art, not music, and he attended the Munich Academy in 1900. Klee loved to use continuous lines in his work, the cat's head and the bird were drawn with one continuous line . Our lesson experiments with both geometric shapes and color.
